Start from what you print on, not from the printer
Most DTF buying mistakes come from choosing a machine before defining the job. The substrate decides more than the printer does. DTF transfers bond to cotton, cotton blends, and to polyester that has been appropriately finished; the same transfer behaves differently on a rough open weave than on a tight knit.
Before comparing models, write down four things: the fabric or item you print on, the largest single image you need, how many pieces a normal working day contains, and the destination country. Those four answers eliminate most of the range before you read a specification table.
Size the working width against the largest job
Working width is the maximum image width the machine can produce in one pass. If your largest design is wider than the machine, the job has to be tiled and seamed, which changes the look of the finished piece and adds labour.
The 2026 catalog spans roughly 300 mm at the compact end up to 1200 mm and beyond on the wider machines. A shop printing chest prints and small logos does not need a 1200 mm machine; a shop printing full back panels or long banners does. Width should be the first filter, because it is the specification you cannot work around later.
Size the printhead count against throughput you can actually sell
Within one series, printhead count is the main throughput lever. The catalog makes this visible. On the 300 mm garment DTF machines, the two-head H3030-3S is listed at 7 m²/h at 4-pass. On the 600 mm machines, the four-head H3070-4 is listed at 28 m²/h at 4-pass, and the eight-head 8128-3 at 55 m²/h at 4-pass.
Those are catalog figures at a stated pass count, and real output depends on artwork, media and conditions. The point is the shape of the step: doubling heads does not simply double output, but it does move you into a different class of daily capacity.
Buy the throughput you can keep busy. A machine that runs at a fraction of its capacity costs the same to own as one that runs flat out, and the finishing side has to keep pace. If your press and your staff cannot absorb the output of a four-head machine, the extra heads are idle capital.
Treat film, powder and curing as part of the machine
A DTF printer on its own does not produce a transfer. The workflow is: print onto PET film, apply hot-melt adhesive powder to the wet print, cure the powdered film, then press it onto the garment. Film, powder, the shaker that applies the powder, and the curing oven are not accessories to be added later; they set your running cost and your production rate.
This is why the catalog lists a powder shaker, heating elements and a temperature alongside the printer specifications on the garment DTF pages. When you compare quotations, compare the whole line, not the printer alone.
The heat press belongs in the same budget
The press determines the final result more than many buyers expect, because temperature, pressure and dwell time are what actually bond the transfer. A press that cannot hold consistent pressure across its platen will produce variable adhesion no matter how good the print is.
Match the platen to the largest transfer you regularly press. If you print on a 600 mm machine but own a 400 mm press, the machine width is wasted on the pieces that matter most.
What a quotation should itemise
Ask for the equipment, printheads, ink, consumables, software licence, accessories and installation support as separate lines. Ask what the warranty covers and whether printheads, ink systems and consumables carry different terms, because they often do.
Ask for a sample printed on your own material with your own artwork. Adhesion, colour and hand-feel are properties of the combination of ink, film, powder and fabric, and no specification table can tell you how that combination behaves on your substrate.

One: substrate and largest image defined. Two: working width chosen against that image. Three: printhead count chosen against sellable daily volume, not against the biggest number available. Four: film, powder, shaker and curing included in the comparison. Five: press platen sized to the transfer. Six: quotation itemised, with warranty scope in writing.
