What head count changes, and what it does not

Adding printheads raises the rate at which ink is laid down, which raises throughput. It does not change the working width, the maximum image size, or the quality ceiling of a given pass setting. Those are set by the machine format and the print mode.

This matters because head count is often sold as though it were a quality upgrade. It is a capacity upgrade. If your constraint is a single wide banner that must not be seamed, you need width; head count will not help you.

What the catalog figures show

The 2026 catalog lists pass-dependent speeds, so comparisons are only meaningful at the same pass count. At 4-pass on the 300 mm garment DTF machines, the two-head H3030-3S is listed at 7 m2/h while the two-head H3030-X5S is listed at 4.5 m2/h, which shows that the printhead model matters as much as the count.

On the 600 mm machines the step is clearer: the two-head H3070-2 is listed at 14 m2/h at 4-pass, the four-head H3070-4 at 28 m2/h at 4-pass, and the eight-head 8128-3 at 55 m2/h at 4-pass.

Read together, these show two levers rather than one. Moving from XP600-series heads to I3200-series heads raises output at the same head count; adding heads raises output again. Both appear in the catalog, and both change the price.

Pass count is the other half of the equation

Throughput figures are always quoted at a pass setting, because pass count trades speed against ink density. The same machine listed at 55 m2/h at 4-pass will be slower at 6-pass and slower again at 8-pass, while laying down more ink per unit area.

When you compare machines, compare the same pass count. A figure quoted at 4-pass against one quoted at 6-pass describes two different products, not two different machines.

Sizing against sellable volume

Estimate the square metres a normal working day contains, then leave headroom for job changes, loading, curing and finishing. As a rough guide, a catalog figure multiplied by an eight-hour shift gives an upper bound that no real shop reaches, because the machine is not printing for all eight hours.

The practical question is not how fast the machine can go but how much of that capacity you can sell and finish. Heads that sit idle still cost money, and a finishing line that cannot keep pace turns the extra throughput into a queue.

Choosing

Start with the widest single image you must produce unseamed, and choose the format from that. Then choose the head count from the daily volume you can genuinely sell and finish. Then choose the head model, and compare only at the same pass count. Finally, confirm the accessory package, because the film, powder and curing equipment set your running cost as surely as the printheads do.
